Sliding bearings are structural components designed to accommodate large horizontal displacements and rotational movements in bridges, railway systems, pipelines, and civil engineering structures. They operate by utilizing a low-friction PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene, commonly known as Teflon) surface sliding against a polished stainless steel plate. This configuration effectively minimizes friction, reduces vibration, and prevents structural damage caused by thermal expansion.

Purpose of Sliding Bearing Testing

The purpose of this test is to evaluate the abrasion resistance of the PTFE sheet used in PTFE sliding bridge bearings.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known by its trade name Teflon™, is a high-performance synthetic fluoropolymer characterized by excellent chemical resistance, an extremely low coefficient of friction, and a wide thermal stability range (from −200°C to +260°C). It is a non-toxic, non-stick material with high durability, widely used in industrial sealing applications, cable insulation, and non-stick coatings for cookware.

Technical Specifications of Sliding Bridge Bearing Test Equipment

The test equipment consists of a vertical axis with a hydraulic compression mechanism and a horizontal axis with a push–pull mechanism connected to a PTFE plate to generate frictional forces acting on the PTFE surface.

  • Horizontal Stroke: 25 mm forward + 25 mm backward (50 mm per cycle)
  • Horizontal Speed: 2.5 – 200 mm/min (adjustable)
  • Equivalent Cycle Rate: 0.05 – 4 cycles/min
  • Vertical Compressive Force: 10,000 kN (adjustable)
  • Horizontal Compressive Force: 2,000 kN
